The University of Washington, in collaboration with academic partners and the USGS, is implementing an earthquake early warning system in the Pacific Northwest. The system is designed to provide seconds-to-minutes of advanced warning of strong ground shaking, which will allow the population and automated systems to secure their surroundings. The system will initially utilize data from seismic and GPS stations on land (Learn more). Part of our effort is to understand how realtime data from an extensive seafloor seismic and geodetic network would improve the timeliness and reliability of the warning for earthquakes that occur offshore on the Cascadia megathrust.
